Miro MCP in Claude: setup, the new canvas tools, and the daily limits

Miro's official MCP server lets Claude read and change your Miro boards, and what it makes shows up as native items on the board. You sign in with your Miro account, and it works on every Miro plan, with a daily cap on tool calls. On 14 September 2026 Miro removed its diagram, doc and layout tools and replaced them with canvas tools that read and write the board as SVG, so older tutorials, and even Claude's directory listing, still describe tools that no longer exist.

Short answer

  • Claude on the web or desktop: Customize › Connectors, find Miro in the directory, connect it and sign in to Miro.
  • Claude Code: Miro's plugin (claude plugin install miro@claude-plugins-official) or claude mcp add. Install it one way only.
  • Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Gemini CLI: Miro documents a setup for each one.
  • Limits: 100 tool calls a day on Miro Free, 500 on Starter, 2,000 on Business and 10,000 on Enterprise, reset at 00:00 UTC. On Enterprise an admin turns it on first.

The community servers are described from their READMEs; we did not run them. The older evalstate/mcp-miro still shows up in lists but looks inactive. Start with the official server unless you need something it can't do.

Set it up in Claude (web, desktop)

  1. Open Customize › Connectors in Claude and browse the directory.
  2. Search for Miro. The listing is marked Anthropic verified, with sign-in required.
  3. Connect it, sign in to Miro in the window that opens, and allow access.
  4. In a new chat, paste a board link and ask for one concrete change, for example "Read the frame called Ideas on this board and add a flowchart of the steps next to it."

Anthropic's help centre says directory connectors are available for all users, Free included. On Miro's side, the user guide says that on Free, Starter, Business and Educational plans "MCP is enabled by default, no signup or approval needed."

The connection works for one Miro team at a time. Miro's troubleshooting page says the last team you signed in with wins, even if you use several MCP clients, so sign in again to switch teams.

Set it up in Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT and others

Claude Code. Miro documents three routes. Use only one: its troubleshooting page says installing more than one gives you duplicate tools. The one on Miro's main MCP page is its plugin from Anthropic's official plugin directory, which also brings Miro's skills:

claude plugin install miro@claude-plugins-official

The same plugin also installs from Miro's own miro-ai repository:

/plugin marketplace add miroapp/miro-ai
/plugin install miro@miro-ai

Or add the plain MCP server without the skills:

claude mcp add --transport http miro https://mcp.miro.com

then run /mcp to sign in.

Cursor. Open the Marketplace in Cursor, search for Miro and click Add to Cursor. The plugin is listed as created by Miro and verified by Cursor, and /add-plugin miro in the chat does the same. Without the plugin, add the server to mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "miro": { "url": "https://mcp.miro.com/" }
  }
}

VS Code with Copilot. Miro's route is the MCP Registry on GitHub: find Miro there and click Install, which adds it to VS Code or VS Code Insiders. You can also search @mcp in the Extensions view, or run MCP: Add Server from the command palette, choose HTTP and paste https://mcp.miro.com/.

ChatGPT and Codex. Add Miro from the plugin directory in ChatGPT, or with /plugins in the Codex CLI, then connect your Miro account. The Codex IDE extension doesn't have plugins.

Gemini CLI.

gemini extensions install https://github.com/miroapp/miro-ai

Miro's connection guide also covers GitHub Agents, Lovable, Replit, Windsurf, Kiro IDE, Kiro CLI and the Amazon Q IDE extension. Its FAQ adds Microsoft 365 Copilot, through the Miro agent for Copilot and the Copilot Cowork Miro plugin.

Tablestable_create, table_list_rows, table_sync_rows (deprecating soon)
Commentscomment_list_comments, comment_reply, comment_resolve
Prototypesprototype_read, prototype_create

Those are the 20 tools on Miro's tools page, updated 17 September 2026. The page also says spaces and sections "keep their own tools" without listing them, so the server may return a different set when you connect.

The page marks the three table tools "Deprecating soon". Miro's changelog says they "are still available" and "will be deprecated at a later date", so don't build anything lasting on them.

The same changelog says these tools "were removed on September 14, 2026": the board reads board_list_items, context_explore and context_get, the layout tools (layout_get_dsl, layout_create, layout_read, layout_update), the diagram tools such as diagram_create and diagram_get_dsl, and the doc tools. The canvas tools now cover that work.

Claude's listing is out of date too. On 7 October 2026 the Miro listing still showed "Show all 31 tools", including the removed context, diagram and doc tools. What Claude can call is whatever Miro's server returns when you connect. If your client cached the old list, disconnect Miro completely and connect it again.

How the canvas tools work

The canvas tools treat a board, or a frame on it, as an SVG document. In the words of Miro's tools page:

  • canvas_read_as_svg: "To read existing items back as SVG. Every item carries a stable data-miro-id."
  • canvas_create_from_svg: "To create items from an SVG document."
  • canvas_update_from_svg: "To apply an SVG document as a diff. Creates, updates, and deletes."

So Claude can "read a frame, change one thing, and write it back without touching anything else", as Miro puts it. The items it writes are native Miro widgets: the page names shapes, text, cards, code widgets, embeds, polls and dot voting. Because canvas_update_from_svg can also delete, try new prompts on a copy of a board.

Daily limits and Enterprise

Miro planTool calls a day
Free100
Starter500
Business2,000
Enterprise10,000, more on request
  • Every call counts, and "Limits reset at 00:00 UTC." At the limit, calls are blocked until the reset and the agent gets an error that suggests an upgrade.
  • An edit usually takes at least two calls, one to read the frame and one to write it back, so 100 calls on Free cover fewer than 100 requests.
  • On Enterprise, Miro's FAQ says "the MCP Server may be disabled by default so a company admin must turn it on." Admins find it under Admin settings › Apps and integrations › MCP, where they can also limit it to some teams or user groups and allow only listed clients (admin guide).

FAQ

Does Miro have an official MCP server?

Yes. Miro runs one at https://mcp.miro.com/. It is listed in Claude’s connector directory as Anthropic verified, and Miro documents setups for Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Gemini CLI. You sign in with your Miro account.

Is the Miro MCP free?

It works on every Miro plan, Free included, with a daily limit on tool calls: 100 on Free, 500 on Starter, 2,000 on Business and 10,000 on Enterprise. The limit resets at 00:00 UTC, and on Enterprise an admin has to turn the server on first.

How do I connect Miro to Claude?

In Claude on the web or the desktop app, open Customize › Connectors, find Miro in the directory and connect it, then sign in to Miro and allow access. Anthropic says directory connectors are available for all users, Free plan included.

How do I add the Miro MCP to Claude Code?

Use one route only. Either install Miro’s plugin with claude plugin install miro@claude-plugins-official, or run claude mcp add --transport http miro https://mcp.miro.com and sign in from /mcp. Miro says installing it more than one way gives you duplicate tools.

What tools does the Miro MCP have now?

Miro’s tools page, updated 17 September 2026, lists 20 tools for boards, the canvas, images, tables, comments and prototypes, and marks the three table tools as deprecating soon. The canvas tools read the board as SVG and write changes back as a diff. board_list_items and the diagram, doc, layout and context tools were removed on 14 September 2026, but Claude’s directory listing still shows several of them.

Can Claude edit or delete items on my Miro board?

Yes. Miro describes canvas_update_from_svg as applying an SVG document as a diff that creates, updates and deletes items, so Claude can read a frame, change one thing and write it back. Try it on a copy of a board first.

Should I use Miro, Excalidraw or tldraw MCP?

Use Miro when the result has to live on your team’s Miro boards. Use Excalidraw for a quick diagram with a shareable link and no account, and tldraw for editing a sketch back and forth inside the Claude app.
